Amana Washing Machine Troubleshooting

Trouble: “Clunking” or gear sounds

Possible Cause: Normal mechanical sounds in commercial-quality washer

Solution: Normal operation.

Trouble: Rattling and clanking noise

Possible Cause:

  1. Loose objects, such as coins or pins, in tub or pump
  2. Belt buckles, metal fasteners hitting wash tub

Solution:

  1. Stop washer and check tub. Remove loose objects. If noise continues after washer is restarted, objects may be in pump: call your authorized servicer
  2. Close zippers, buttons, and fasteners. Clothing with buckles must be turned inside out.

Trouble: Squealing sound or hot rubber odor

Possible Cause: Overloaded wash tub

Solution: Do not overload washer. Stop washer and reduce size of load. See Washing Guide for proper load level information.

Trouble: Thumping sound

Possible Cause: Heavy wash loads; unbalanced loads

Solution: Usually normal, but unbalanced loads should be redistributed. Stop washer and rearrange load.

Trouble: Vibrating noise

Possible Cause:

  1. Washer not resting firmly on floor
  2. Wash load distributed unevenly in tub
  3. Shipping plug not removed during installation

Solution:

  1. Make sure floor is strong enough for washer. Adjust leveling legs so washer rests firmly on floor. See Installation Instructions for leveling details
  2. Stop washer and rearrange load
  3. See Installation Instructions for details on removing shipping plug.

Trouble: Spray/whistling noise

Possible Cause: Spray rinse

Solution: Normal operation. Washer sprays water inside tub while running at high speed during rinse and spin.

Trouble: Washer does not start

Possible Cause:

  1. Electrical power cord may not be plugged in, or connection may be loose
  2. Fuse blown, circuit breaker tripped, or power outage occurred
  3. Water supply faucets not turned on
  4. Timer knob/cycle selector set incorrectly
  5. Motor overheated

Solution:

  1. Make sure plug from power cord fits tightly into wall outlet
  2. Replace fuse or reset circuit breaker. Do NOT increase fuse capacity. Call qualified electrician to correct circuit overload problem. Call local utility company to correct power outage
  3. Turn on water supply faucets.
  4. Move indicator slightly clockwise. Pull out on timer knob.
  5. Internal overload protector automatically stops motor in event of overload.

Trouble: Washer won’t spin

Possible Cause: Lid partially open

Solution: Close lid completely.

Trouble: Residue left in tub

Possible Cause: Heavily soiled items

Solution: Wipe tub with non-abrasive household cleaner and rinse. Before washing, shake or brush excess dirt and sand from items.

Trouble: Wash load too wet after spin

Possible Cause:

  1. Overloaded wash tub
  2. Unbalanced load
  3. Kinked drain hose

Solution:

  1. Do not overload washer. See Washing Guide for details
  2. Rearrange load to allow proper spin
  3. Straighten drain hose

Trouble: Water enters slowly or does not enter washer

Possible Cause:

  1. Inadequate main water supply
  2. Water supply faucets partly closed
  3. Water being used elsewhere in house
  4. Clogged water inlet filters
  5. Kinked water inlet hoses

Solution:

  1. Check water pressure at another faucet in house. Wait for water supply and pressure to increase.
  2. Fully open hot and cold water supply faucets
  3. Water pressure must be at least 20 psi (138 kPa). Avoid running water elsewhere when washer is filling.
  4. Disconnect water fill hoses from faucet. Clean and reposition screen filters. Reconnect water fill hoses.
  5. Straighten hoses.

Trouble: Water level does not cover clothes

Possible Cause:

  1. Incorrect water level/load size selection
  2. Overloaded wash tub

Solution:

  1. Select higher water level/load size. Add water by turning selector to RESET and back to larger load size.
  2. Do not overload washer. Largest dry load level should not be higher than bottom of fabric softener dispenser or top of agitator.

Trouble: Warm or hot water not hot enough

Possible Cause:

  1. Water heater temperature set too low; water heater too far from washer
  2. Hot water being used elsewhere in house

Solution:

  1. Use candy/meat thermometer to measure hot water temperature at nearby faucet. Water temperature should be at least 140°F (60°C). Adjust water heater as necessary.
  2. Avoid using hot water elsewhere before or during washer use, or there may not be enough hot water for proper cleaning. If problem continues, enlarge capacity of hot water system, or use for only one application at a time.

Trouble: Water drains slowly or does not drain

Possible Cause: Drain hose kinked or clogged

Solution:  Clean and straighten drain hose.

Trouble: Water leaks

Possible Cause:

  1. Loose fill hose connections
  2. Clogged drain pipes
  3. Changed water levels during fill
  4. Oversudsing

Solution:

  1. Check and tighten all hose/faucet connections. Install rubber sealing washers provided.
  2. Unclog drain pipes. Call plumber if necessary.
  3. Always use RESET on water level switch when changing water level. Do not hold switch at RESET; return switch to desired load size.
  4. Use less detergent.

Trouble: Incorrect wash and rinse temperatures

Possible Cause: Hot and cold water hoses connected to wrong supply faucets

Solution: Check hose connections. Connect hot water hose to hot water faucet; connect cold water hose to cold water faucet.

Trouble: Water enters washer, but tub does not fill

Possible Cause: Incorrect standpipe height for drain hose

Solution: Recommended standpipe height is 36” (91.44 cm); for low standpipes, install Siphon Break Kit (part #562P3). See Installation Instructions for details.
